When I left off on blogging, we were sitting at 37 weeks. I went back to the dr. on Monday, Dec 21 for my 38 week appointment. Originally, my dr. wanted to induce that week, but after the ultrasound and examination, he said he felt that we would be ok to wait another week. WHOOHOO! I really wanted to wait until after Christmas because I had a strange feeling we would be in the hospital for a few extra days & didn't want to miss Christmas with Skyler & Grady.
So, we scheduled induction for Monday, Dec 28. I arrived at the hospital Sunday night, checked in, and they inserted the Cervadil. I did let the nurse know that I didn't think I should take the Ambien because it did not help me rest with my previous Cervadil induction, but she thought maybe I had not taken a good enough dose. Soo......against my better judgment, I took 2 Ambien. Shortly after 10 that night, Abby Cate's heart rate started doing funny things, so the nurse came in and had me get on my right side to sleep and also put me on oxygen. Grrr, I hate those masks! We did this routine all night long so needless to say, by 7 a.m. Monday morning, I was exhausted.
My dr. came in to break my water and start the pitocin that morning. He was unsuccessful at breaking my water, but we did start the pitocin. Abby Cate's heart rate began to do the same thing again, so over on my right side I went and out came the oxygen mask again! About an hour after starting the pitocin, the dr. came back in and broke my water successfully and inserted a catheter to pump in fluids around baby girl. He also turned off the pitocin because my contractions were good and strong on a low dose. I continued to contract very good and the fluids appeared to be helping her heart rate stabilize, so I got in a more comfortable position. About 45 minutes into relaxation, her heart rate went crazy again! UGGGHHH!!!!
By this point, it was around 11:30 and I was already so tired from all of the excitement. I wasn't really in too much pain but my contractions were getting stronger. Not only that, but I wasn't dilating very much at all.
My dr. was called and he decided that we needed to go in and do a c-section right away. He knew how quickly I was wearing down and he didn't want to risk any trauma to Abby Cate by continuing with labor. Abby Cate was born shortly noon weighing 4 lbs. 6 oz. and 18" long. She came out screaming, but because she was so small, it sounded like a little kitty cat squalling!
After snuggles and kisses from mommy and daddy, she was whisked off to the NICU - the NICU dr. and staff were in the delivery room as we already knew she would be small. I stayed in recovery for about an hour and then they wheeled me downstairs to see her. She was SO tiny and I was almost afraid to hold her.
She never required a feeding tube or breathing tube. She ate like a pig from day one and breathing was fine. She did require an iv because of her blood sugar, but that was the one and only thing that kept us there for any amount of time. She was there for 11 days before it was stabilized enough to come home. Because we live over an hour from the hospital, the dr.'s wanted to make sure they were comfortable with her feedings and sugar so that we would not have to rush her back in the case of something happening.
We came home doing 4 sugar checks a day (heel pricks) and as she grew and steadied herself, we weaned down to 3 a week. As of Monday, we are down to NONE! She has received her pink slip from the endocrinologist and she is cleared! Now, she can be a normal little girl who only goes to the dr. for regular check-ups!
So that is our birth story and a little bit of what's been going on. I went back to work the day after her 3 month birthday - I was so thankful to be able to spend those 3 months with her! Big sister and big brother are completely in love as well as mommy and daddy!
